Dr Yu-Tang Shen is a consultant psychiatrist with advanced specialist training in psychiatry of old age and psychotherapy. He sees patients aged 16 years and over and works across the adult lifespan.
He provides comprehensive psychiatric assessment, medication management and ongoing psychiatric care. Dr Shen’s approach is person-centred, neuroaffirming and trauma-informed. He works collaboratively with patients, their families, general practitioners, psychologists and other health professionals. Treatment is individualised and may incorporate medication, psychological therapy, practical and functional interventions, shared care with the patient’s GP and neurostimulation where clinically appropriate.
Dr Shen has extensive psychotherapy experience, including psychodynamic psychotherapy, eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR certified), Internal Family Systems therapy (Level 2 trained), interpersonal psychotherapy (advanced training) and dialectical behaviour therapy-informed approaches. Regular psychotherapy is available on a limited basis.
He has undertaken additional postgraduate training in psychology and is experienced in cognitive and psychometric assessment, including intellectual, memory, learning, personality, adaptive functioning and broader functional assessment.
Dr Shen completed his medical training at the University of Melbourne and undertook specialist psychiatric training at Prince of Wales Hospital, St George Hospital, St Vincent’s Hospital and other NSW health services. His public-sector experience has included older-person mental health, neuropsychiatry, acute inpatient psychiatry, emergency and psychiatric emergency care, community mental health and consultation-liaison psychiatry.
At Waratah Private Hospital, Dr Shen has held clinical leadership and governance responsibilities within the ECT and rTMS services.
His academic work has included published research in neuroimaging and epilepsy and in depression, suicidal behaviour and mental disorders among older Aboriginal Australians.
Dr Shen consults in person at Re-centre, Waratah Private Hospital and by telehealth. He consults in English and Mandarin.
