Dr Adrian Fung is a vitreoretinal surgeon and macular disease specialist. He also has expertise in tumours of the retina and choroid.
Dr Fung graduated in medicine from the University of New South Wales with first class Honours, before completing both a Master of Medicine in Ophthalmic Science and a Master of Medicine with merit in Clinical Epidemiology at the University of Sydney. He undertook ophthalmology training at The Sydney Eye Hospital where he was elected as the Professorial Senior registrar and won the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO) Filipic Greer Award for highest mark in Advanced Pathology. He was the national Senior Trainee Group spokesperson for the RANZCO Council and Federal Quality & Education Committees.
Dr Fung completed the William H. Ross Vitreoretinal Surgical Fellow at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada, being awarded both the RANZCO Allergan and Sydney Hospitallers Norman Rose Travelling Scholarships. During this time he became an expert in managing surgical retinal diseases. He then completed the LuEsther T Mertz Medical Retina Fellowship at Vitreous Retina Macula Consultants of New York and the Manhattan Eye & Ear Hospital, New York, USA. Working under the supervision of world-renowned specialists Professor Lawrence Yannuzzi and Dr Bailey Freund, he was trained in medical retinal diseases. He has also been a research scholar in uveitis at Bascom Palmer Eye Hospital, Miami, USA (voted best ophthalmology hospital in the USA since 2004) and in ocular oncology with Professors Jerry and Carol Shields at the Wills Eye Hospital, Philadelphia, USA (the largest oncology unit in the world).
He has written multiple books and book chapters, including “Ophthalmic Clinical Examination- The Sydney Eye Hospital Registrars’ Manual” and “Vitreoretinal Surgery for Trainees – The University of British Columbia and Sydney Eye Hospital Manual”. He has published dozens of manuscripts in major international ophthalmology journals, including Ophthalmology, Archives of Ophthalmology and Retina and is a reviewer for several of these. He has presented at international ophthalmic meetings, and is a member of RANZCO, ANZSRS, ORA, AAO, ASRS and ARVO. Dr Fung continues to conduct clinical research and has been involved as a sub-investigator in international clinical trials. He particularly enjoys being involved in teaching.
