More about cataract surgery

Do you need private health insurance to get my cataract surgery fast-tracked?

No, you do not require private health insurance to have your cataract removal procedure done promptly at Waratah Private Hospital. We offer a very competitive rate for non-insured patients.

This initiative has been actioned by the Waratah Specialist Centre in response to the thousands of people currently waiting for this procedure in New South Wales. The wait is now over.

While cataract surgery is one of the most common and safest operations performed worldwide, time is of the essence, and it’s important to act quickly to preserve your natural eyesight. The outcome of the surgery depends on your prior condition. Our ultimate goal is to optimise your vision and, in doing so, improve your quality of life.

A cataract is the clouding of a natural lens behind the iris, or coloured part of your eye. This is very common as we get older, but cataracts can occur at any age. In your initial consult, one of our expert ophthalmologists will use the latest in diagnostic equipment to ensure your suitability for cataract surgery.

Surgery is the only effective treatment for cataracts.

Whilst cataract surgery is safe and effective, like all surgical procedures, it doesn’t come without risk. During your initial consult with your surgeon, our ophthalmologist will discuss any possible risks and benefits of the surgery specific to your unique circumstance.

During cataract surgery, tiny incisions are made in the cornea, the clear part of the front of your eye. The surgeon uses specialised instruments to fragment the cataract and remove it from the eye. An intraocular lens is then placed behind the iris, restoring clear vision.

Waratah Private Hospital’s leading technology and direct access to expert ophthalmologists means the surgery is a safe and fast day procedure using local anaesthetic. Your recovery is rapid, and you go home the same day. You will experience significant improvement in vision post-surgery. You may see clearly when driving or watching TV without glasses.

Prior to procedure
You will need to fast for six hours prior to the procedure. In general, you will be able to continue your regular medications, including blood thinners.

The day of the procedure
You will be at Waratah Private Hospital for about three to four hours in total. Drops will be placed into your eye to dilate the pupil. Our specialist anaesthetist will greet you and commence numbing your eye. Surgery takes approximately 30 minutes.

Discharge
You will go home the same day with a patch on your eye. It is important to have someone present to take you home post-surgery as you will not be able to drive. You will be discharged from the Hospital with all the information you need for follow-up and after care.

You will be reviewed the following day, and your ophthalmologist will give you further instructions.

For your convenience, Waratah Private is connected to My Health Record, and we send a copy of your discharge summary to your GP.
